Lighting from 18 to 22h

A four-hour rule for evening light that makes every apartment feel ten degrees warmer.

Lighting from 18 to 22h

I learned this from a small hotel restaurant in Lisbon. From sunset onwards, no ceiling lights. Only lamps, candles, and the dimmer set just below half. The room felt half a degree warmer than it physically was. The conversations felt softer. People stayed longer.

I tried it at home. The apartment changed.

The rule, simply

  • From 18:00, no ceiling lights - even if it's still bright outside.
  • One warm lamp at every height in the main room: floor, table, shelf.
  • Bulbs at 2700K (warm white). Never higher.
  • One candle, lit at 19:00. Blown out at 22:00. Daily.

Why every height matters

The eye relaxes when light comes from below it. A single overhead light keeps the brain on alert. Three lamps at three heights - floor, table, shelf - flatten the visual hierarchy and tell the nervous system the day is over.

An apartment lit only from above is a workplace. An apartment lit at every height is a home.

What to put on a dimmer

Whatever you can. Floor lamps and table lamps are easy - most accept dimmer plug adapters that cost less than a meal out. The dimmer is not for ambience. It's for matching the light outside as it falls.

The smallest version, if you can do nothing else

Buy one warm 2700K bulb. Replace one cool bulb in your living room with it. Light it at 18:00. Notice the difference within a week.
