October is the month interiors finally stop performing summer. The light shifts. The palette wants to follow it. Five tones, used together, will carry an apartment through the full autumn.
The five
- Terracotta - for one focal piece. A vessel, a throw, a candle vessel.
- Oat linen - for surface texture. The throw, the runner, the cushion.
- Walnut - for vertical anchors. Shelves, frames, lamp bases.
- Warm cream - for the background. Walls, larger upholstery.
- Ember - the deep, near-black brown. For one small detail only.
The proportion that works
Use them in this exact ratio:
- 50% warm cream
- 25% oat linen
- 15% walnut
- 8% terracotta
- 2% ember
The 2% ember is the one almost nobody adds. It's the dark line at the bottom of a frame, the unglazed rim of a mug, the cast iron of a lamp base. It's what gives the whole palette weight.
A palette without a deep tone is a palette that floats. Add the ember last. Add it small.
Where each tone goes
Living room
Cream sofa, oat throw, walnut shelf, one terracotta vessel, one ember candle holder. That's the entire room.
Bedroom
Cream walls, oat linen bed, walnut frames, terracotta throw at the foot, ember reading lamp.
Entryway
Cream wall, walnut bench, terracotta dish for keys, ember-toned coat hook. Done.
This is the palette I use every October. By mid-November the apartment doesn't need redecorating - only re-emphasising. Add a heavier throw. Trade the terracotta vessel for an ember one. The same five tones carry through to February.
